I'm Fanus.

I love figuring out how things work, and building solutions to solve everyday problems.

My work focuses on machine learning and language systems: recommendations, search, retrieval, classification, RAG, agents, fine-tuning, and training language and embedding models.

I've applied my skills across healthcare, network devices at Cisco, and now Atlassian, where I work on recommendation systems and sales and marketing applications.

Right now, I'm sharing the journey behind Qal, a small Tigrinya-first language model I trained from scratch for real-time autocomplete.

Outside of that, I read, lift weights, and I'm starting to write more about the things I'm building and learning.
