I'm Fanus.

I love figuring out how things work, and building solutions to solve everyday problems.

My work runs across machine learning and language systems: recommendations, search and retrieval, classification, RAG, fine-tuning, and training language and embedding models. I've applied this in healthcare, networking, and at Atlassian, where I work on sales and marketing applications.

Right now, I'm sharing the journey behind building Qal, a small Tigrinya language model for autocomplete, with a few more projects coming next.

Outside of that, I read, lift weights, and I'm starting to write more about the things I'm building and learning.
